How we create "pools" - teams of 4 - for Pool Play

When grouping teams for pool play, for example, Varsity Boys teams, we use the following priorities:
The first consideration is geography so that the likelihood of teams ever playing each other during the regular season is very small. For example we've had groupings in the past having teams from New York, Georgia, Texas, and Florida. This would almost ensure that these teams probably never played each other before.

The second consideration is team won-loss record to balance out the 4-team pool so that it contains a fair and balanced mix of strong, medium and weak teams.
note: a pool of all strong teams is a disadvantage - causing the better teams to play tougher competition and having their records blemished before the divisions are created
note: a pool of all weaker teams is also unfair because the pool play competition is weaker and gives a deceptive won-loss record as the divisions are created

So with the balance of geography and team records, we will establish random pools that are labeled with a number only for purposes of organization. In other words, Pool #1, is not a ranking, just an identifier for the 4 teams that will be in it.

Frequently Asked Questions
(always adding questions and answers, keep checking back)

Is there admission for spectators? - No, all 150 games are absolutely free!

What are player and coaches' passes? - We give each player and coach a customized pass on a lanyard. For campus security reasons, these must be worn by participants to all venues : Track Court, LaHaye Center, LCA, Schilling Center and the Vines Center. Second, these make great souvenirs since they are specially customized for the 2010 event.

What is the difference between "Pools" and "Brackets" ? - A "pool" is a group of 4 teams selected randomly by geography and sometimes win-loss records are used to create balanced pools. A pool is assigned a number, but no one pool is better than the other. A team in its pool plays all the other teams within its pool, known as "pool play". At the completion of pool play all teams have played in 3 games. Using the outcome from pool play, teams will have records of 3-0 or 2-1 or 1-2 or 0-3. Using team records and tie-breakers, teams are then "seeded" from top to bottom. The top 4 teams are placed into the highest bracket (for the boys, "7A"; girls "4A" and JV Boys "3A". Then the next 4 teams are placed into the next highest bracket, and so on. Each "BRACKET" now competes in its own semi finals and then its own Championship or Consolation game. HSPN and My Sports Dreams team up to help you raise $4,000+ for travel and equipment
Here is some awesome news in a tough economic climate. We've reached a partnership deal with My Sports Dreams, the nation's leading fundraising solution for college and high school teams.

Over 15,000 teams have used them to pay for tournaments, equipment, and uniforms. The best part - your players don’t have to sell anything, work events, and you’ll be done in less than one hour. It’s ridiculously easy! A typical team earns $211 PROFIT PER PLAYER!

If that kind of money could come in handy to your program, make sure to reserve your spot today. They’re holding 40 spots this fall for Homeschool teams. And don’t worry -- there’s no way to lose money because your profit is guaranteed!
